Our Experts

Dr Edward Shepherd

After growing up on a small sheep farm in North Yorkshire, I read Archaeology at the Universities of York, Buckingham and Birkbeck, with a focus during my Master’s and PhD on the animal remains and architectures from the Early Neolithic in Britain. I have lectured at Birkbeck, University of London, excavated sites within the Stonehenge landscape (alongside others throughout Britain), presented my research at international conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals.

I have led over 400 small group tours from London since 2011, visiting sites such as Stonehenge, Bath, Salisbury, Windsor, Glastonbury, Avebury, Lacock etc. I have over 250 excellent reviews on TripAdvisor and was a finalist for the ‘World Guide Awards’ in 2016. I love being able to talk about the things I am passionate about, and feel proud to create an unforgettable experience for those on my tours.

Outside of work, I enjoy travelling with my wife and four daughters (Ava, Arden, Olive and Lola) to West Cornwall, where we eat ice cream, visit archaeological sites and walk coastal paths.

Thomas Lyons

I currently work in UK field archaeology with Archaeology South East in Essex (part of University College London) and have twenty-five years’ experience in excavation and study in archaeology, along with two university degrees. Much of this has involved commercial field work in England - which accounts for the majority of archaeological work carried out today. I have been lucky enough to participate in numerous teaching and research projects across the UK and throughout the Middle East and North Africa.

For almost twenty years I have been involved in field work in the Stonehenge World Heritage Site at the site of Blick Mead, just near Amesbury. Elsewhere in Wiltshire, I contributed to recent research excavations at the enormous site of Marden Henge in the Vale of Pewsey, an amazing monument comparable to Avebury in size.

I have been leading day tours with Archaeologist Guided Tours to Wiltshire since 2016 and never tire of visiting these special places with people who are often visiting archaeological sites and exploring the English countryside for the first time.
