"My wife and family spent 3 weeks in England, Scotland, and Ireland. This tour was the by far the absolute highlight of our trip. The knowledge provided by our guide was not the result of memorization of travel material but was borne out of personal experience as he related to the various sites. Highly recommended for anyone who wishes to know the story behind the story."
"I have been on scores of tours on seven continents over the past 30 years. This was the best. I spent a long time working over my itinerary to see England. Once I had all the days worked out, I went back and changed my bus tour of Stonehenge to the Archaeologist Guided Tour. It was more expensive, but it was the best choice I made on my tour of England and worth every penny. Our guide was like an uncle who came for a weekend visit to tell us of what he's been up to for his entire career. He didn't talk to us like a lecturing professor. He talked to us like family. He was patient, thorough, kind, and exceptionally capable. He knew everything. I know a lot about Stonehenge. I learned a lot. My family knew very little about Stonehenge. They were enthralled. They know I never write reviews. They demanded that I let everyone know how wonderful this trip was. Thank you to Archaeologist Guided Tours for making our trip so memorable. Here's a plus. They come and pick you up in a comfortable Mercedes van. They bring you back. We didn't just go to Stonehenge. We went to all the nearby places that make Stonehenge understandable and meaningful. A great day. Highly recommended."
"My family of 4 adults booked two day, back to back private tours with Dr Edward Shepherd, or Ed as we got to call him. Those included the Bath and the Cotswolds as well as Stonehenge, Salisbury Cathedral and Avebury. We had a personal driver named Nas pick us up at our hotel in central London and drive us in extreme comfort in a spacious Mercedes Bens Mini Van.
In my 30 years traveling to 30+ countries, this experience was hands down the best tour I have ever been on. My family enjoyed Ed's whimsical tales and advanced text book knowledge of the sites we visited. He catered to every question we had (even before we stepped foot in the county during the planning stages). He became not a tour guide anymore but as a family friend who was taking us around a country he obviously has great passion for. We enjoyed his company so much that on both days, we invited to lunch with us.
If you want a tour guide that perhaps works for a large tour operator and reads a script, Ed is not for you. Yes, the cost is not as cheap as other tours available but it is also not as exorbitant either. Remember, you are being shows sites that are thousands of years old and your tour operator has a PhD and in some case has actually worked on these ruins conducting research. That is a priceless thing to have on a tour."
"This tour was fantastic. Edward explained the history and archeology in such a way it came alive. We had a wonderful day and this was the highlight of our trip. We would highly recommend this tour to anyone interested the archeology."
"Outstanding experience at Stonehenge! We figured if we were going to spend the day, we should be with a credentialed academic and Archaeologist Guided Tours delivered just that. Tom painted a fascinating picture for me and my 16-year-old daughter - kept it interesting and we walked away invigorated. Can't recommend these guys highly enough."
"Archaeologist Guided Tours offers a much more in-depth look at pre-historical England. The guides are all working Archaeologists, with doctoral-level knowledge of the field, and a passion for teaching. They will go far beyond the surface-level stories you will hear on other tours, but will talk about the techniques that archaeologists use to study sites like Stonehenge, the controversies and debates about the people who lived in England thousands of years ago, and the latest papers on the subject.
If you want a deep dive into deep human history lead by an expert guide, this is by far the best choice."
"Stonehenge, Wayland's Smithy, Uffington Horse, ancient British history! We spent two fantastic days with Tom, a professional archaeologist. I wanted a private special tour of ancient British history. Tom was so prepared and knowledgeable. And he was wonderful to travel with. The way we explored Stonehenge was amazing. We spent time in the afternoon in the other Stonehenge landscape, learning about the entire area. Then we visited Stonehenge with Tom at 6:45 pm and it was like we had it all to ourselves. He knew all the ways to make it special. I was reluctant to get too excited about Stonehenge due to the crowds but it was magical!! Two of the best days of my life as a passionate ancient British history student. Highly recommend!"
"A remarkable day travelling to some of England’s most ancient sites. Edward was our guide and gave us wonderful insights into the history of these monumental structures. Edward was a true teacher: he informed, inspired further learning and the day flew by. Highly recommend this tour."
"In 2017, my sister and I took a tour with Archaeologist Guided Tours. The day was so incredible that I booked a private tour over the 2025 holidays for me, my husband, and our teenage daughter. It's quite hard to put into words how special this experience is. You get to spend the day with a person whose life's work is understanding the prehistory of Britain. Dr. Edward Shepherd is a gifted storyteller, laying out the context for sites like Stonehenge and Avebury in such a way that you feel you are standing in the ancient past. Even our teenager, who is not so much a history buff as we are, reflected on the day with awe and appreciation. The logistics for the day were all carefully planned by Dr. Shepherd, taking into account my particular interests to include a visit to the West Kennett Long Barrow. We were privileged to be driven for the day by a private chauffeur in a comfortable sprinter van. We were picked up and dropped off at our London accommodations.
If a private tour of these sites is within your budget, please book this tour. It's a day you will never forget."
"We feel so lucky to have found Edward of Archaeologist Guided Tours through a simple google search. I am interested in archaeology while my husband has zero interest, and miraculously Edward managed to keep us both captivated for the entire day. Seeing Stonehenge and the related sites was cool, but having Edward’s perspective and explanations made it simply amazing. He is not only full of information (and he knows exactly how much to give - not info overload unless you want it, in which case he can answer any questions you have) but he is a nice and hilarious guy. It felt like going to Stonehenge with your best (and funniest) friend! I can’t recommend this tour more highly."
"The trip was the most memorable we have ever done. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and good fun. It was a fantastic day and I would do it all again in a heartbeat."
"What an amazing tour!!! We had a group of 13 and got a private tour of Stonehenge, Bath, and Avebury with a very knowledgeable archeologist. He was engaging and explained everything in great detail. Everyone in our group from the adults to the small children absolutely loved the tour. The guide answered all of our questions and kept us entertained and well informed. This is the ONLY way to see this magnificent site. WOW..."
